What is the Creators Guild of America?

The CGA is a non-profit professional service organization (501(c)6).  We represent a membership of creators across the entire supply chain of the creator economy.

What are the goals of the CGA?

We seek to promote and protect the emerging profession of digital content creation, providing resources such as project accreditation, educational/workshop programming, social and networking opportunities, and a platform for advocacy. A foundational goal of the CGA is to provide creators with the kinds of institutional benefits enjoyed by more established professions.

Is the CGA a labor union?

No. The Creators Guild is a professional service organization. Some of our benefits, such as project accreditation, are similar to those offered by unions. But the Creators Guild does not act as a collective bargaining unit, or claim any of the legal privileges accorded to unions.

What benefits are included when I join?

Members of the Creators Guild are able to register completed work for accreditation and gain access to programming and in-person events, job opportunities, and a variety of professional discounts offered through our partner organizations. Associates of the guild receive limited access to events and programming.

What is project accreditation and why does it matter?

In every creative profession, your credits are your currency. They demonstrate a public record of accomplishment, the foundation on which your reputation rests. Consider how central IMDb.com has become to the film and television industry; no comparable resource exists for creators. By creating a certified public record of your work—independent of who owns that work or where it's hosted—you establish yourself as a professional, whose skills have been validated by your partners in the creator economy.

How will the CGA help me and creators?

In addition to the benefits listed above, the CGA advocates for the creator profession. By joining, you strengthen our collective voice in seeking fair pay, content ownership, royalties, and award recognition to name a few. The CGA will also work with agencies, studios, and brands to encourage hiring opportunities.

What are the requirements, and who reviews my application?

The CGA represents three categories of members: Media (onscreen talent and individuals with significant audiences), Marketing (production, distribution, and design), and Makers (founders, developers, and producers). Eligibility requirements for each category are mandatory for membership and all applications are reviewed by respective CGA peers.

Is there a fee to join the CGA?

Yes, annual dues for the CGA are $99 (per year). Dues are eligible as business expenses and are therefore tax deductible. Members must pay dues to remain in active status and to enjoy CGA benefits. Alternatively, members can earn their place by joining our Advocates Program avoiding the annual dues altogether.

Can I still get involved if I’m not eligible?

Yes, that's what our CGA Associate membership is about.  There's no cost to join and no eligibility requirements.  The benefits aren't as robust as those of full members, but it's a great way to introduce yourself to the organization, receive CGA-related communications, and start building the credits that will get you to full membership.
