Why Vetting Matters

A creator partnership attaches your brand to a person’s audience, history, and judgment. Fake followers waste the budget; a buried controversy spends your reputation. Both are discoverable in advance by anyone willing to look. Vetting is not distrust, it is the same diligence you would apply to any vendor holding your brand in public.

Real Reach vs. Fake

Follower counts are the easiest number to fake and the least useful one to buy. Compare followers to typical view counts, watch for sudden follower spikes without matching content moments, and check whether the audience’s language and location match the creator’s content. An account with a million followers and four thousand views per post has already answered your question.

The Engagement Test

Read the comments before you read the metrics. Human engagement is specific: people reference the content, argue, tag friends, ask questions. Bot engagement is generic praise, emoji strings, and the same accounts cycling through. Engagement rate matters less than engagement quality, and quality is visible in thirty seconds of scrolling.

Content and Conduct Review

Scroll deep. The post that hurts you is never on page one. Review the back catalog for positions and moments your brand cannot stand next to, check past sponsored work for how they treated other brands, and confirm their disclosure habits, a creator careless with the last brand’s disclosures will be careless with yours.

The Checklist

Before booking: audience size against actual views, engagement quality by hand, follower growth pattern, audience geography and language, back-catalog review at least two years deep, past sponsored content and its disclosure, and a direct conversation about process. One hour, in this order, catches nearly everything that later becomes a headline.

When to Walk Away

Walk away from purchased reach, from resistance to disclosure requirements, from refusal to put terms in writing, and from a back catalog you had to talk yourself into accepting. There is no audience large enough to compensate for a partner you cannot trust. The market is deep; the next creator is a search away.
