What Is Creator Whitelisting?

Creator whitelisting is paid media access connected to a creator’s identity. The brand is not simply reposting a video or image on its own feed. It is running an ad that appears from, or is associated with, the creator’s account. On Meta platforms, this is commonly handled through partnership ads or branded content permissions. Performance teams want this because the ad carries the creator’s handle, social proof, and platform-native context, while still letting the brand buy distribution.

What Are Spark Ads?

Spark Ads are TikTok’s whitelisting format. A creator can authorize a specific organic TikTok post for paid promotion by sharing an authorization code with the advertiser. That code is tied to a defined permission window and lets the brand promote the post without taking ownership of the creator’s account. The creator grants ad access for the approved post and duration, but keeps the underlying account, audience relationship, and content identity.

What Access Does a Brand Actually Get?

Access depends on the platform and the agreement. In general, the brand may get permission to promote a specific creator post, create a paid ad associated with the creator handle, choose targeting, set spend, and view paid performance. The brand should not receive the creator’s password, control unrelated posts, alter the creator’s profile, or use the access beyond the approved scope. Access should last only for the stated campaign window, with a clear end date and a way to revoke permissions if terms are breached.

What Should Whitelisting Cost?

Whitelisting is normally priced above content-only work because the brand is borrowing more than the asset. It is borrowing the creator’s identity, handle, and audience trust for paid media. Common structures include a flat fee for a defined usage window or an added percentage on top of the content fee. The right number depends on scope, duration, platform, spend level, approval rights, and whether the whitelisted ad can be edited or reused.

Risks for Brands and Creators

The largest risks are usually operational, not creative. Account access should be permission-based, logged, and limited to the platform’s ad tools. Brand safety review still matters because the creator’s handle appears on the ad. FTC disclosure obligations also apply to boosted content when there is a material connection. Vague terms create avoidable disputes about edits, spend, duration, and who can pause the ad.

The Whitelisting Checklist

A clean whitelisting agreement should cover written authorization, the exact post or content, approved platforms, campaign duration, spend caps, editing rights, review and approval rights, disclosure language, reporting access, and revocation terms.
